Hypertension & Hyperlipidemia Treatment in Dubai
Hyperlipidaemia and Hypertension are commonly found in the population and are independent risk factors for cardiovascular complications. The combined presence of hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia increases considerably the risk for cardiovascular complications. These
high-risk patients have to be identified early and treated appropriately in order to avoid complications.
When to get your cholesterol checked?
High cholesterol can start in childhood or adolescence. That’s why current guidelines suggest
beginning screenings during childhood.
- Children and teens: Get your cholesterol checked every five years starting at age nine. A child whose parents have high cholesterol or a history of heart problems may begin even sooner.
- For males: Get your cholesterol checked every one to two years for men ages 45 to 65. After age 65, get checked every year.
- For females: From age 55 to 65, get checked every one to two years. After age 65, get checked every year.

Medical conditions that can cause unhealthy cholesterol levels include:
- Chronic kidney disease
- Diabetes
- HIV/AIDS
- Hypothyroidism
- Lupus
Cholesterol levels can also be worsened by some types of medications you may be taking
for other health problems, such as:
- Acne
- Cancer
- High blood pressure
- HIV/AIDS
- Irregular heart rhythms
- Organ transplants
Diagnosis of High Cholesterol
To measure cholesterol levels, your doctor will take a simple blood test, known as a lipid panel.
Lipid panel test results will be used to assess levels of:
- Total cholesterol
- LDL cholesterol
- HDL cholesterol
- Triglycerides
When should you visit an Endocrinologist for Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol)
Endocrine conditions such as diabetes or hypothyroidism can lead to changes in lipid levels. Hormones control every pathway for fats and proteins and are transported to support metabolism. The primary hormones involved in this process are estrogen, testosterone, insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormone, growth hormone, and glucagon. So it is recommended to consult the best Endocrinologist in Dubai to treat the condition as they are experts in treating the base cause, which is related to hormones.
Treatments by our Endocrinologist for Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol)
- For patients with type 2 diabetes, statin therapy is recommended to reduce the risk of heart disease.
- For patients with hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides) with levels over 500 mg/dL, medication is recommended, in addition to diet and exercise, to prevent pancreatitis.
- For patients with obesity, it is recommended to make lifestyle changes to lower triglyceride levels, which will decrease the risk of pancreatitis. Some patients may also need medications to reduce weight or undergo weight loss surgery.
- For patients who undergo weight loss surgery, schedule an appointment with our Endocrinologist to measure the lipid panel after recovery from surgery to assess the risk for heart disease.
- For patients with type 2 diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, we suggest using medications in addition to statins to reduce the progression of retinopathy.
- A fasting screening lipid panel is recommended to diagnose cardiovascular risk in women with PCOS. Lifestyle choices can help lower lipid levels in these women. Lipid-lowering medication is not advised in women with PCOS to treat elevated testosterone levels or infertility.
- In women who have undergone menopause, we recommend treating lipid abnormalities with statin therapy rather than hormone therapy because hormone therapy can increase the risk for cardiovascular disease.
- For men with low testosterone levels, testosterone therapy should not be used to treat abnormal lipid levels or heart disease risk.
Diagnosis of Hypertension
- Ambulatory monitoring: A longer blood pressure monitoring test may be done to check blood pressure at regular times over six or 24 hours.
- Lab tests: Blood and urine tests are done to check for conditions that can cause or worsen high blood pressure. For example, tests are done to check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels and also to check your kidney, liver, and thyroid function.
- Electrocardiogram: An electrocardiogram tests the heart’s electrical activity. It can tell how fast or how slow the heart is beating.
- Echocardiogram: This non-invasive exam uses sound waves to create detailed images of the beating heart. It shows how blood moves through the heart and heart valves.
When should you visit an Endocrinologist for Hypertension?
You should see an endocrinologist for hypertension treatment if you have high blood pressure that’s difficult to control or if your doctor suspects there might be an underlying hormonal cause. Conditions like primary aldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, and Cushing’s syndrome can contribute to high blood pressure, and an endocrinologist is skilled at identifying these issues. They will take a detailed medical history, monitor your blood pressure, conduct a physical exam, and perform various tests. These tests may check your electrolyte levels, kidney function, blood sugar, urine, complete blood count, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), cholesterol levels, and an electrocardiogram (ECG) to evaluate your heart health.
Conditions like diabetes, adrenal disorders, and obesity often contribute to high blood pressure and cholesterol, requiring an integrated care plan.
