Obesity Treatment in Dubai
Obesity is a complex metabolic disease, not simply an issue of willpower or self-control. Being overweight or obese is not the individual’s fault; it arises from a complicated biological process where the body tends to hold onto more fat. This can lead people with obesity to crave calorie-dense
foods and store excess calories as fat, resulting in weight gain, specifically, an increase in body fat.
The exact reasons behind this are still not fully understood, but several factors may contribute, including poor diet, unhealthy muscle composition, lack of sleep, disruptions in circadian rhythms, and medications that promote weight gain.
Certain medications, such as those for diabetes, mental health conditions, neurological disorders, or inflammatory diseases, can lead to weight gain. Your doctor might suggest alternative medications that have less impact on weight. Additionally, some hormonal imbalances, like hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) or Cushing’s syndrome (high cortisol levels), can also contribute to weight gain, although these are less common causes of obesity.
Being overweight (BMI > 25 kg/m²) or obese increases the likelihood of developing various health issues. These can include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, fatty liver disease, more severe liver conditions, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gallstones, high cholesterol, gout, and certain cancers.
Diagnosis of Obesity
Obesity is using a number called the body mass index (BMI). Your BMI is calculated from your current height and weight.
For most people, the higher their BMI, the more body fat they carry. A person may be considered to have
- Overweight: If their BMI is >25 kg/m² (>23-24 if you are of Asian background).
- Obese: If their BMI is >30 kg/m².
- For individuals of Asian ethnic background: Risks of extra weight are observed at lower levels of body weight, so definitions of overweight (>23-24) and obesity (>27-28) differ in this population.

How Does an Endocrinologist help in Obesity treatment?
Endocrinologists are experts in metabolism and hormonal changes. They can treat the weight gain these conditions either cause or contribute to. They do this by helping regulate hormone levels and speed up metabolism. Endocrinologists can also help treat diseases that may affect weight, like type 2 diabetes.
Secondary Causes of Obesity
Secondary conditions, which frequently have endocrine causes, can be identified through a careful medical history, physical exam, blood tests, saliva tests, and X-rays if needed.
Secondary causes of obesity include:
- Acne
- Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
- Cushing syndrome/Cushing’s disease
- Insulinoma
- Brain trauma or brain tumors
- Medications
- Sleep disorders
Obesity Treatment
Treating secondary causes of obesity, if present
- Diagnosing and treating complications of obesity, such as diabetes
- Prescribing diet, exercise, and other lifestyle changes
- Referring to a Specialist for Bariatric surgery
Persistent weight gain may result from underlying hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, or diabetes, and addressing these root causes is key to sustainable results.
